Change Maker
Libby Sanders' confident aura, articulate verbiage, and very staunch opinions make it hard to believe that she is a 17-year-old high school senior. Already "out of the box" on everything from politics to education to censorship, she has even printed 5,000 copies of her very own newspaper (The APPLE), has been accepted to UT-Austin and already knows that she will be a professor, so that she can enlighten others. We at Change are proud to introduce you to this Clear Creek High School student who is just starting her journey in life, but who has no doubts as to what direction she will take.
My Aspirations: I'm addicted to education, so it makes perfect sense to me to become a philosophy professor, or as I like to call it, a "professional student."
My Inspiration: My mother is an amazingly talented woman and a former high school biology teacher. She instilled the supreme importance of life-long education in me, and any success I gain in life can be attributed to her guidance.
Why I think I will be successful: I have confidence in my passion, and that is the one thing that will keep my head above the water, whether others consider my near drowning successful or not.
How I plan to do it: This year I began taking philosophy and religion classes at San Jac South with Profs. Danny Brown and Carlos Atalay. They have been amazing teachers not only in their subjects but in the art of teaching itself. By continuing my education with professors of their caliber, I'll be able to pass that gift on to others.
What I've learned and what I think I will continue to learn: People are different. We can barely ever agree on anything, but it's those differences that make humanity the one thing we all understand.
What I know thus far: That in the scheme of things, I know nothing at all.
When not in school, I: love watching bad horror movies with my friends, debating with my boyfriend about whether Boston Legal or Law and Order: CI is better, and reading as much as possible on as many subjects.
Person(s) I admire: Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy - the two men I think could have collaborated to make America live up to its name. Also, my dad.
What's ahead: College at UT-Austin, then who knows! I want to study abroad in Holland or Switzerland, start teaching as soon as possible, and maybe find time to make another edition of The APPLE!
Favorite Quote: "When they lose their sense of awe, people turn to religion. When they no longer trust themselves, they begin to depend upon authority. Therefore the Master steps back so that people won't be confused. He teaches without teaching, so that people will have nothing to learn." - Tao te Ching, 72
