Scientific Cleaning and Restoration can tackle a big mess with a small footprint...
“I guess it’s part selfish,” admits Adam Flagan, the owner of Scientific Cleaning and Restoration. “I don’t want to be around all kinds of harmful chemicals—and I don’t want my family around them.”
He really doesn’t want your family around those toxins, either.
That’s why Flagan made a conscious decision to use as many environmentally friendly chemicals as he could when he opened his business. Scientific Cleaning and Restoration began last year, following Flagan’s layoff at NASA (he was a flight controller for the Space Shuttle program and an astronaut trainer). He originally thought he’d run a business that helped home and business owners restore their properties following disasters like hurricanes and floods, but along the way his business plan morphed into something else. He realized the equipment used in such restorations was expensive and he knew, as a new small business owner, he couldn’t have it sitting around in a warehouse waiting on the next fire or flood.
But it turned out that some of the equipment he’d use for restoration was also the same equipment used by carpet cleaners. He figured he’d start there and tooks steps to move forward, eventually hanging out his shingle as a carpet cleaning professional.
“It’s an unbelievable amount of cleaning supplies and chemicals,” he says about what’s necessary to do the job. Flagan not only cleans carpets, he can clean tile and grout, as well as clean up upholstery such as sofas and love seats. “And the trick is to use chemicals that not only clean well, but don’t have harmful particles in them that can ruin your carpets.”
Flagan has done is homework on the subject. A self-proclaimed “nerd” of an engineer who was a professional firefighter in college, he’s always had a bent toward science and how things work. That was put to excellent use during his time at NASA and he’s put forth the same kind of dedication to the details in Scientific Cleaning and Restoration.
“Back in the 1970s, the cleaners and chemicals professional carpet cleaners used were carcinogenic. I mean, we’re talking about chemicals that can dissolve bone,” he says. “We’ve come a long way, certainly, in having better chemicals to use today, but I knew I didn’t want anything scary like that coming into my house and being around my children and my pets.”
Flagan says that the demand for eco-friendly products in the marketplace has helped him tremendously in that there are now many companies making green cleaners, guaranteed not to harm those who use them. He uses cleaning products made by a company out of Spokane, Wash. The cleaners are non-toxic and hypo-allergenic with no volatile organic compounds or off-gassing.
“They don’t leave a residue,” says Flagan. “And that reduces instances of re-soiling, so carpets stay cleaner longer. I chose them because these products are made with all natural components, so I know I’m protecting the health of the families I’m serving.”
Strong customer service is something Flagan takes seriously. His website (www.scientificcleaningandrestoration.com) demonstrates to potential clients the care and precision he’s taken to make sure that every cleaning product and every piece of equipment is something that not only cleans as it should, but was selected because it helps Flagan take better care of his clients. For instance, he insisted on corner guards to make sure that his equipment doesn’t damage a client’s property and his pH pen meter helps him determine what’s behind any mysterious stains, so that he can take the best approach to cleaning them without costing his customers extra time or money.
He says he’s excited about his growing business and he’s equally happy he’s building it by being eco-friendly.
“I was born and raised in Alaska,” he explains. “I’m part Eskimo and it’s deeply engrained in Native American culture that you work to sustain your resources. Right now, I’m at a good balance and I’m learning more about conservation and recycling.”
Flagan says one of his eco-friendly goals is to help children with sensitivities and allergies. Using his products and dedicating his business to cleaning is one way he figures he can change lives.
“Everything I use is safe for families, children, pets and myself,” he laughs.
